Riding a Segway is always something I have wanted to attempt. So on this gloriously warm and sunny February day, my 11 year old son, Ryan and my Mom, Mary, joined me in a totally rockin’ Segway adventure.
Segway Orange County is located on the Balboa Peninsula in Newport Beach. Just a little store front I have wondered past a thousand times, unnoticing the adventure that awaits inside. We called ahead to get some information and make a reservation. So after a fantastically yummy meal on the Balboa Pier at Ruby’s, we checked into Segway OC.
This organization runs smoothly and instilled a lot of confidence right off the bat. We three were all fitted with helmets and given a 10 minute training session on our Segways in the safety of the showroom floor. Then we were instructed to watch a quick Safety Video on Segway tips and courtesies. Then we were ready to roll!
I felt a little nervous for the first few minutes. I didn’t want to run over someone on the boardwalk or go flying off my Segway. But Wow! It was amazing how quickly the wheels under my feet became part of me. It was a very natural and gentle feeling. I felt under control the entire time. Now I was ready to go cruising.
I am a Newport Beach local. Born and raised right here, but I learned so much fun and interesting local facts on our tour. From historical buildings to famous residents of the past and now, to natural history and real estate prices, we learned a new fact at every turn. There was a fun fact for everyone. My 11 year old son loved to hear of the amazing homes that had entertainment center built under ground with soda fountains, pop corn machines and 2000 gallon fish tanks. I enjoyed hearing about all the residents and who lived in which home. The home values were amazing as well.
We rode from the Balboa Pier all the way down to the Wedge, the farthest most point of the peninsula and Newport’s famous big wave spot. Our group hopped off our Segways and took a 5 minute break while learning more facts on the homes and fun locations on the other side of the bay, Corona del Mar.

All of us were thrilled to hop back on our Segways and start our return trip up the peninsula. We stopped often to hear more tales of homes and local history. Once we got to the Fun Zone area, we rode on the bayside sidewalk through the Fun Zone. Past the Pavilion, arcades and Farris Wheel we cruised.
Not one of us wanted our adventure to end. As we rolled back into the showroom with humongous grins on our faces we were already planning our next Segway Tour.
Thanks to Scott, our guide, and his great local knowledge and quick wit the three of us had a truly memorable day in the Newport Beach sunshine.
